Loft conversion types

Six ways to convert a loft.
Your roof decides which fit.

The shape of your roof narrows it down fast. Here is what each type is, who it suits, and a guide price for a 3-bed semi with a standard finish and no bathroom (+ VAT).

Not sure which roof you have?

Pick “I'm not sure” and we'll tell you at the survey

Hipped roofs slope on three or four sides. Gable roofs slope on two sides, with a flat, vertical wall at each end. A hipped roof needs a hip-to-gable first, which is why its conversions are priced separately. If you're looking at your house from the street and can't tell, the calculator has an “I'm not sure” option and our surveyor confirms it in person.

The one measurement that matters most is head height: we need 2.25m from the top of the ceiling joists to the underside of the ridge. Most homes built before the 1960s have it comfortably.
